I love to imagine the sound of your project. I believe in the power of listening as a creative tool.

The exercise of memory is fundamental to tell my first approach to sound. An approach to the sense of listening with a narrative and transforming vision.

This event is located in my childhood and related to my father's departure abroad for work. I grew up as the youngest of three brothers who competed with each other on a daily basis. At the age of 7 to 14 years old at the time, my mother found it very difficult to control our arguments during her husband's absence.

Shouting, banging and pulling doors were the daily routine of a woman living with three boys orbiting around her. That apartment in Havana in the 90's was a place out of control.
But one day that difficult situation changed with the purchase of a cassette recorder. Our mother would start recording the arguments of her three children to show them as irrefutable proof of our bad behavior. We would be exposed to our father, who would come home and listen to the tapes.

The cassette recorder imposed itself as a device in our behavioral change. It was never clear to us when we were being recorded and we were forbidden to touch the device.
Everything changed in the family environment. What were once fights and yelling became Spanish and English lessons. Those tapes transformed my mother's daily life. And somehow, they replaced the absence of our father.

Today, after 25 years of this story, I still have a cassette from that time. It does not contain the discussions that were recorded during that period. Because of the precariousness of the moment, the tape had to be rewritten. Perhaps as an organic gesture of erasing the past and wanting to forget by adding new sounds to the family.
